Dear Pastor Kim, My wife is a nurse researcher and professor connected with Mass. General. She wonders if a researcher could contact any of the moms in your congregation for a study. I have a lot of respect for medical researchers in our area and my wife's efforts to find participants. Following is some information about the study. It's not my wife's study but the request to your community comes through a colleague of hers.
Hello! My name is Cindy Liu, Ph.D and I'm a infant researcher at
Children's
Hospital Boston. My research team and I are currently conducting a study
on
Asian/Asian American (Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc) mothers and
4-month-old
infants. I was wondering if you would be willing to refer your
Asian/Asian
American patients to this study. The aim of this study is to establish
social-behavioral and physiological norms for healthy 4-month-old Asian
American
infants for clinical assessment. We use two paradigms, one that assesses
infant
reactivity to visual and auditory stimuli, and a social stimuli that
involves a
face-to-face interaction with mothers. The study is non-invasive.
Although we require Asian/Asian American mothers who are comfortable
reading and
writing English, I am attaching English and Chinese (simplified and
traditional)
translated fliers of the study - I am in the process of working on other
translations. I also pasted the content of the fliers in this email (see
below)
for your convenience.
Asians tend not to volunteer for behavioral studies, so any referrals
from
physicians will be of great help. As it turns out, those who have
already
participated have been mothers who are physicians from the medical
community
here in Boston. This study will be ongoing for the rest of the year but
we are
really trying hard to get things rolling by word-of-mouth. If you could
review
these materials, and let me know if you could refer patients or even
friends (or
if you have any ideas for recruitment) that would be helpful.

New or Expectant Asians / Asian American Mothers
This is a study that looks at the social and emotional development in
healthy
4-month-old babies. During the visit babies will look at moving objects,
listen
to interesting sounds and play with their mothers.Mothers must be able
to speak
and read English. The study takes place at Children's Hospital Boston
(the
research building near Fenway) and parking is free. It's a one-time
session that
takes approximately 2-2.5 hours. Child care for siblings can be
provided.
Mothers are compensated $50 for their time.
